Hope Alexandra Herbst Hope’s summers were spent at her parent’s private wilderness campground. Drawing inspiration from her outdoor adventures, Hopes explores the visually dramatic effects of certain temporal and atmospheric conditions on otherwise everyday scenes with the focus ultimately remaining on the figure and its power to engage the viewer. Hope Herbst is a basically a self-taught artist who's style could best be described as abstract realism as she feels it strikes a perfect balance between the comfort of the real and pushing creative aesthetics. Plein air painting has been crucial in Hope’s learning. Plein air painting (painting outdoors) allows for further research of colors and the simplification of the composition. Although Hope Herbst is a watercolourist, she works with various mediums depending on what is required for the story. She has always loved old black and white photographs and tries to bring that same depth and intensity (of colour) into all her own work. Hope expresses “Watercolor has been my favorite medium for over 30 years, and continues to provide unique opportunities and challenges”. Hope Herbst was born and raised in Orillia, Ontario, Canada. Family and work became her main drive over the past years. Following a successful advertising career, Hope continues to hone her artistic skills; experimenting with various techniques. Hope’s work is in private collections throughout Canada and USA and Australia. Collectors state they are drawn to each of the paintings, recognizing the buoyant optimism and unique story of each piece. Education
